Recently we read from the news about planning of the next government to raise the price of fuel oil by cutting subsidize. This is because the world price of petroleum keeps increasing which cause a rise on burden of government budget spending. Is it strategy to raise fuel oil price the best strategy which our government can offer?

The increase of fuel oil price can be good method because petroleum has natural characteristics as not renewable natural resources. Someday it can be exhausted. Moreover, the disastrous impact of increasing in private vehicles has been clearly seen in which the amount of air population rise. The air quality in some big cities like Jakarta is no longer safe for our lungs. It also causes congestion on road which becomes vast majority problem of the government.

However, after four times changes of government, our public transportation still does not have any improvement. The planning to swap user of private vehicle into public transportation is only fairy tale. When government does not have money anymore to subsidize fuel oil, at the time government urges to do improvement in public transportation. This is the basic character of our government, they always think about many people benefit at the last turn because at the first turn, they think on how to get back all money which he had spent in campaign.

On the other hand, to solve the problem of budget, government can use another solution. Government can increase its income by doing improvement in tax systems and cutting off finance to a sector which does not give good feedback. As we know, the quality of public servants in some area in Indonesia is still low. Hence government should make new policy in order to increase performance of the public servants which will eventually raise economy growth.

In conclusion, if government has been firm with its decision to increase the price of fuel oil, then government should start from now to think about swapping private car with public transportation and increasingly doing efficiency in budget spending.
